World Languages

Elementary World Languages: Students build foundational language skills through simple texts and listening exercises. French and Spanish programs progress through grades:


  • Grades 1/2: Introduction to language and culture.
  • Grades 3/4: Progression to Novice Mid (ACTFL level).
  • Grade 5: Transition to Middle School, aiming for Novice High (ACTFL level). Resources include teacher-generated materials.


Middle School World Languages: Students deepen their language skills through grammar and cultural exploration. Courses offered:

  • French/Spanish 1: Prepares for ACTFL Novice High.
  • French/Spanish 2: Develops skills for ACTFL Intermediate Mid. Resources: A La Une, Dynamo (French); Viva, ActiveLearn (Spanish).


High School World Languages: Advanced learning with immersive experiences. Courses include:

  • French/Spanish 1: Foundation skills leading to ACTFL Novice High.
  • French/Spanish 2: Reinforcement and cultural understanding, aiming for Intermediate Low.
  • French/Spanish 3: Engagement with diverse texts, targeting Intermediate High.
  • French/Spanish 4: Advanced language and cultural analysis, leading to ACTFL Advanced Low.
  • AP French/Spanish: College-level proficiency, focusing on writing, presentations, and comprehension. Resources: D’accord, Imaginez (French); Temas (Spanish).

World Languages Standards (5 Cs):


1. Communication: Emphasises effective, respectful interactions in cultural contexts.

  • Interpersonal: Real-time exchanges (spoken/written).
  • Interpretive: Understanding meaning from various texts.
  • Presentational: Delivering information effectively.

2. Cultures: Understanding perspectives, practices, and cultural expressions.

3. Connections: Integrates language learning with broader academic subjects and global themes.

4. Comparisons: Encourages analysis of linguistic and cultural differences to foster awareness.

5. Communities: Focuses on real-world application, global engagement, and lifelong learning.
